Quickly advance your career by learning how to harness it.In partnership with Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, the USciences Online certificate in genomics program gives you an advanced understanding of genomics and genetics and the role they place in pharmacy, medicine, nursing, social work, ethics, legal, and computer science fields. You’ll benefit from access to the MyCode Community Health Initiative at Geisinger, which analyzes the DNA of patient-participants, to improve understanding and tailor treatment based on genetic influences on health. You’ll learn from industry experts and gain new skills and resources that you can immediately leverage for improved disease research and patient care.
Throughout this four-course program, you’ll explore topics in DNA sequencing technologies, genetics research, and personalized medicine. Each eight-week course will build upon the other, giving you a solid foundation in concepts of genomics for use in your current role, or to prepare for further education.
Upon completion, you’ll be able to:
- Critically analyze, translate, and apply genetics and genomics in education, research, and practice.
- Demonstrate an understanding of epigenetics and pharmacogenomics.
- Discuss the social, ethical, and legal issues associated with genetics and genomics.
You can transfer up to three credits of coursework with a 2.3 GPA or better to the certificate. Credits earned during the program count toward the USciences Online MS in Genomics.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 27% growth in genetic counselor employment from 2018 to 2028—much faster than the average for other healthcare practitioners and technical occupations, which is only expected to grow by 10%. Genetic counselors can work with families, patients, and other medical professionals in environments such as hospitals, labs, and universities.
